What's new

Changes in QPad

What is new, better and fixed in each version, newest first. QPad tells you at startup when a new version is ready.

Version 1.0.155

Latest version
  • Improved

    English website on getqpad.com

The English website is now on getqpad.com, and qpad.no shows the Norwegian pages unless you have picked EN or NO in the language menu. The links in the license dialog open getqpad.com. Your account, licenses and devices are the same on both addresses.

Version 1.0.152

  • New

AI assistant with your own API key

Add your own API key from Anthropic (Claude) or OpenAI under Edit → AI assistant settings, and open the assistant next to Results and SQL, or with Ctrl+I. Describe what you want and get a query back, or use Explain the error, Fix the error and Explain the code. The assistant knows the tab's language, code, errors and the tables and columns of its connection, also for your own EF Core DbContext. Answers appear as they are written, and code blocks can be inserted at the cursor or replace the query. The question, the code, the errors and the names and types of tables and columns are sent to the provider you chose; never query results, connection strings or passwords. The key is stored encrypted, and the use is billed by the provider on your own account. This is a Pro feature.

Version 1.0.151

  • New

    Debugger with breakpoints

Click left of the line numbers or press F9 to set a breakpoint, and F5 runs the query with the debugger. It stops on the line, and you can step with F10, F11 and Shift+F11, see the variables under Locals, the methods under Call stack, and a value by hovering over a name. An exception the query does not handle stops on the line where it was thrown. Without breakpoints the query runs as before. This is a Pro feature.

  • New

Query with your own EF Core DbContext

Point a connection at your project's built DLL and pick the DbContext. QPad suggests how to create it: your design-time factory, a constructor with DbContextOptions, a connection string from the dialog or appsettings.json, or a parameterless constructor. The DbSets are available by name with code completion, SaveChanges works, the SQL EF Core runs is shown in the SQL view, and the schema tree shows your model. QPad uses your project's own EF Core version, works on a copy of the build, and picks up a rebuild by itself. This is a Pro feature.

  • Fixed

Queries no longer stopped by Microsoft Defender

Microsoft Defender sometimes mistook a compiled query for malware and stopped it. QPad now compiles queries in a way that avoids this, and explains what happened if a virus scanner still blocks one.

  • New

    SQL mode

Choose SQL in the language list to write SQL straight against the tab's database. Each result set is shown as a table that can be exported, changes show how many rows were affected, and PRINT messages are shown as text. GO splits SQL Server scripts into batches, a selection runs on its own, and errors point at their line. Code completion suggests tables, columns and keywords, also after an alias. SQL mode is a Pro feature.

  • New

Export results to Excel and CSV

Above each table in the results are Copy, CSV…, Excel… and Open in Excel. Copy pastes the table straight into Excel, Word or a mail. In Excel, numbers, dates and true/false keep their types, with a bold header row and filters. Export is a Pro feature.

  • New

Accounts on qpad.no: Free, Pro and Educational

Licenses are now managed on your account at qpad.no. Free has IntelliSense and quick fixes for the first 14 days, Pro is free for now, and Educational is free for students and teachers. A license works on up to 3 devices. The license window in QPad shows the edition, has Refresh, and can remove the license from the device to free its place. Keys sent by e-mail keep working until February 1, 2027; register with the same address to keep your key.

Choose a color theme for the editor

Under Edit → Edit theme you can choose between Visual Studio, Visual Studio Code and One Dark Pro. Each theme has a light and a dark version, and you see both before you choose.

  • New

    Light bulb on errors

A small light bulb with an arrow appears in front of the line when a fix is available. Hover over it or click it to see the suggestions.
